Did You Over Indulge on Super Bowl Sunday?

Super Bowl 2017 is officially in the books and what a game it was. Whether you were pulling for the Falcons or the Patriots, it was a game for the record books. Chances are you were invited to some sort of gathering celebrating the big game, or the commercials. Whilst cheering on your team or cheering against their opponent, you probably enjoyed a multitude of savory and sweet treats, not to mention alcohol. According to an ABC News article from 2015, the Super Bowl packs a 2400 calorie punch for party goers who go all out celebrating. A one pound increase in body weight takes only 3500 calories so for many, so this one day correlates to close to a pound in weight gain. Eat This Not That goes even further citing a study from Cornell University in which researchers found that party goers probably consume around 6,000 calories. This gluttonous celebration makes it the second most caloric filled activity of the year with Thanksgiving topping the list. So, did you over indulge? If so, know that you are not alone. You can bounce back easily by taking a few simple steps. Here’s how:

Start the recovery process the same night you eat too much. Quality shut eye will do wonders on your road to recovery.

Don’t starve yourself the next day in hopes of making up for lost time. The next day, you will probably feel hungry even after eating so much the evening this is before. This is due to the insulin spike your body received due to eating so much. It’s tempting to skip a few meals the next day, but don’t. Instead, fuel up on fiber and protein.

Forgive yourself for over doing it and start over. There is no way you can go back and undo the consumption so choose not to focus on this. Decide that today you will do things differently and let the past go.

Drink up…water that is. You definitely want to make sure you are properly hydrating yourself after a night of indulgence. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you are getting half your body weight in ounces of water. For example, a 150-lb. individual should drink approximately 75 oz. of H20 a day.

Break a sweat, even if you do not feel like it. You don’t have to have a major sweat session at the gym the very next day. You can simply go for a 30-minute walk or light jog. The important thing is to make yourself get moving and remember that exercise is not meant to “undo” a bad diet choice. You won’t be able to make-up for the excess calories safely by exercising them away in one day. It simply does not work that way.

Focus on clean eating for the next several days by ingesting foods in their purest from and avoiding processed sugar, alcohol, and most processed foods. These can be hard to digest and you don’t want your body working in overdrive right now.
