Exercising During the Holidays

With the holiday season upon us, we all know that it is basically a given that we will be eating either more than our usual amount or foods that aren’t as healthy for us as our usual choices.  Even if you employ excellent self-control and don’t have either of these issues, we still have some fun suggestions on how to get your exercise during the holidays.

Since we are blessed with fairly moderate temperatures during the holiday season, it is still comfortable enough to go outside to get some exercise.  Walking and running are two forms of cardiovascular exercise that are useful in improving cardiovascular health, endurance, and overall fitness.  After all, we will be walking our entire lives.  The more we can walk, the healthier we stay.

A 5k is a great way to get moving and burn off some calories!  In case you don’t know what a 5k is, don’t panic.  It is 3.1 miles.  That may sound like a lot if you aren’t used to running distances like that, but it is not that far to walk.  Many people are trying to walk 10,000 steps a day.  That actually equals approximately five miles, so now you can see that walking 3.1 miles is quite feasible.

If the 5k still seems like a bit much for you, then check out the Run Run Santa one mile race!  It takes place in Viera on Dec. 22 and Vero Beach on Dec. 23.  You receive your own Santa suit to wear for this race. In true Florida style, it is a shorts and short-sleeve Santa suit!  These races benefit Calvary Chapel Viera’s 412 Youth Missions and Outreach Program and Indian River Healthy Start Coalition’s Babies & Beyond, respectively.

Perhaps you prefer the water, instead of land activities.  There is something for you too!  On Christmas Eve morning, dressed as Santa, surfers take to the water in Cocoa Beach.  The Surfing Santa tradition is going on its tenth year here.  If you prefer to watch the surfers hit the waves from the sandy shore, you can participate in the costume contest by wearing your favorite winter-themed outfit – Mrs. Claus, reindeer, etc.  The contest is divided into age categories.  This entire event is free to the public.

These are just a few of the fun events taking place in our area.  We hope you have fun, exercise during the holidays, and enjoy your time with family and friends!  We know that many of you are facing serious weight issues and need help and support to reach your weight and health goals.  Call us at Advanced Surgical and Weight Loss Institute for help with your rapid weight loss.  We offer a variety of robotic surgeries and weight loss programs.  If you live in the Melbourne or Merritt Island areas, please give us a call today!
