Are Liquid Calories Stifling Your Weight Loss?

You are sticking to your exercise routine. You are eating nutritious foods. You have a huge fruit smoothie every day for goodness sake…so why aren’t you losing the weight? Well, it could be that you are unknowingly consuming more calories than you think by not including your daily coffee, fruit juice, or smoothie concoction into the mix. Even the ever popular green juice can contain 140 calories per cup! The reality is that liquid calories are the same as those that come from solids and must be accounted for. So, where are these calories hiding? Here’s a look at some of those places.

We just mentioned green juices and along with that, fruit juice is a big culprit. You would think you are doing yourself good by drinking a large glass of OJ in the morning, however, fruit juice contains approximately the same amount of calories as a soda. Fruit juices are also high in sugar and often contain additives like high fructose corn syrup. The next time you have the choice between a sugary beverage, even fruit juice, stop and consider how much sugar is contained within. It is easy to be deceived by the labeling of such so-called “healthy” drinks. But now that you know, you can make the best choice for you.

After a challenging workout or a walk/run in the heat, many of us grab a sports drink to recover. While they are tasty and do contain some electrolytes, sports drinks are also high in sugar. If possible, try a product that helps you replace the electrolytes you lost without all the added sugar. On this same note, protein drinks have become all the rage lately. While including a post workout recovery drink may be a good idea, be sure to look for something that is low in calories and sugar as well. These products can pack on the calories and, in turn, pounds.

Your morning coffee could be sabotaging your diet like nothing else. Black coffee drinkers do not have much to worry about but for those of you whole love adding milk, creamer, sugar, whipped topping, and more, the calories can add up quick. For example, if you add 2 ounces of cream and 4 teaspoons of sugar to your coffee, you’ve also added 184 calories. You can make healthier swaps such as adding nonfat milk and stevia that will allow you to enjoy your coffee without the additional calories.
