Get Out – I Have Gout?!

You may have never heard of gout or, if you have, you might think only elderly people get it or simply have no idea what it is.  You are not alone, no matter which of these applies to you.  That’s why we want to give a little time and attention to this often misunderstood ailment.

Gout is actually a form of arthritis.  Gout isn’t necessarily the same as other arthritis, though.  Arthritis is often found in the joints, particularly joints that you have used a lot in your profession or vocation.  For instance, it is not uncommon for those who have spent their lives with their arms up above their heads doing things like painting or hanging drywall to have arthritis in their shoulders.  If you have experienced an injury from a sport, then you may very well end up with arthritis at the site of the old injury.

According to the Mayo Clinic, gout occurs when there are high levels of urate crystals accumulated in your joints.  These crystals can form when you have high levels of uric acid in your blood.  This is where you will see a difference between gout and other forms of arthritis.  What you eat can affect the uric acid levels in your blood; therefore, what you eat can make you more likely to develop gout!

What should you avoid if you have gout and want to limit flare-ups?  Unfortunately, steak and seafood can exacerbate the issue.  Alcohol is also not good for gout sufferers, particularly beer.  Additionally, drinks sweetened with fructose should be avoided.  Obesity and genetics can also contribute to gout.  There is nothing you can do about your genes, but you can control what you eat and drink.  If you are suffering from gout or have a family history of it, you really should be mindful of your diet.

The pain associated with gout can be severe, sometimes causing people to be unable to walk due to the pain.  Gout usually occurs in the large joint of the big toe.  Gout causes tenderness, redness, and swelling in the joint.  The pain from gout can come on quite suddenly and intensely.  While you can do your best to fend off gout, it may not be possible.  If you do develop symptoms, it is important to see your doctor right away.  While dietary changes can help, there is medication available to help too.
